A while back I did a post on some of Michael's kayaking videos and towards the end I added one his friend Matt filmed where they rescued their friend who had gotten pinned. Since I did that post Matt's video of the rescue has gone viral with well over 100,000 views and many different internet sources giving their take on the heroic effort. I watch Good Morning America every single day and apparently Monday morning they showed the video...which of course I missed because it came on after I left for my conference. Although Michael and his friends are great kayakers I like that this video shows that they always have each others back on the river and that no matter what you always watch out for who is around you.
A few months ago a kayaker Michael and his dad knew met up with a group of people he had never met and asked if he could follow them down a river he wasn't as familiar with. Kayakers do this all the time, I know Michael and his friends have gladly shown someone down a river and made sure they watched out for them. This guy who followed people down ended up taking the wrong line down the river and splitting up from the guys who knew the river which resulted in something happening and he got pinned and since no one was there to help him he lost his life. It took the group of guys he was following the rest of the river to realize he had gone missing because his boat showed up down in the lake. I'm not at all blaming those guys for what happened but they should have been there for him and realized he took a wrong line and checked to make sure he was okay. This is a sport that although has a competitive side is also driven by teamwork and Michael and his friends (aka Team Latestart) really portray that in what they do.
